NFL Minicamp Kicks Off Tuesday with 24 Teams

The 2024 NFL offseason workout session comes to a close on Monday, but the majority of teams will kick off mandatory minicamps on June 10. Twenty-four clubs, including the Arizona Cardinals, Atlanta Falcons, and New England Patriots, will begin their mandatory workouts, marking a distinct difference from previous voluntary offseason sessions.

The defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles are scheduled for just one day of mandatory work, while some teams, like the Texans, Falcons, and 49ers, will run just two days. The minicamps represent a significant change from previous sessions, as players are now subject to fines for missing work – with unexcused absences carrying penalties of more than $100,000.

Some players may use this opportunity to make a statement in their search for new contracts. Washington Commanders receiver Terry McLaurin has decided not to attend minicamp, following a similar move last year when he was also searching for a new deal. Fellow pass rusher T.J. Watt from Pittsburgh and Cincinnati’s Trey Hendrickson have also skipped mandatory minicamp.

The “hold-in” tactic, where players skip work but still receive media attention, has become increasingly popular in recent years. While this may be done to avoid fines, it can still put pressure on the club to offer a new deal. The vast majority of players without contract situations will attend minicamp, providing an opportunity for teams to assess their rosters before breaking for summer.

During the three-day period, fans will have the chance to see players in action and get a glimpse into position battles, such as Cleveland’s quartet of quarterbacks angling for the starting gig. With only one prayer that we come through minicamps with as few major injuries as possible, the upcoming days promise an exciting – if injury-free – spectacle.
