NFL Players Association Executive Director Resigns Amid Controversy

NFL Players Association (NFLPA) executive director Lloyd Howell has resigned, citing distractions caused by his leadership. Howell claims his focus on leading the union has become a distraction to its daily work.

Howell’s resignation comes amid controversy over his outside job with private equity firm Carlyle Group, which holds league approval for minority ownership in NFL franchises. The revelation also led to an arbitrator’s ruling about possible collusion over quarterback salaries being kept under confidentiality.

Recently, it was reported that two player representatives who voted for Howell were not aware of a 2011 lawsuit filed against him while he worked at Booz Allen, alleging sexual discrimination and retaliation. Howell has denied any wrongdoing in the lawsuit.

Despite the controversy, Howell expressed pride in what the NFLPA has achieved over the past two years. He will step down immediately to allow the union to focus on its player members ahead of the upcoming season.
