NFL Players’ Association Leadership Race Narrowed to Two Candidates

The leadership of the NFL Players’ Association (NFLPA) is down to two candidates after a discussion between player reps and union leaders. JC Tretter has gained majority support, while Don Davis is also in contention due to strong push from players. There’s no set timetable for naming an interim executive director or electing a full-time leader.

The NFLPA executive committee will vote on the recommendation for the interim position, but ultimately, it will be decided by the 11-member board. Federal investigators are conducting a probe into sports union officials and OneTeam Partners, which holds stakes in five sports unions, including the NFLPA. The union’s hiring of Howell in 2023 was criticized for lack of transparency.

Howell announced his resignation after weeks of controversy surrounding his leadership, including reports of a potential conflict of interest and agreements with the NFL to hide information about an arbitration decision. He does not have a background in sports and was hired by the NFLPA despite lacking experience.
