The National Football League (NFL) has unanimously approved a proposal allowing players to participate in flag football at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. The move marks a significant expansion of the sport’s global reach, with NFL star wide receiver Justin Jefferson hailing it as a “dream come true.”
Jefferson, who played in the reimagined Pro Bowl Games and has experience with flag football, expressed excitement about the opportunity to compete on an Olympic team. However, he didn’t commit to trying out for the 2028 squad, citing the need to weigh his options.
NFL executive Troy Vincent praised the decision, stating that it will be “phenomenal” to see top athletes from around the world participate in a single event. The league still needs to negotiate with the NFL Players Association and Olympic officials on specific details, but Vincent expressed confidence that players will be protected and given the opportunity to showcase their talents.
Other NFL players, including linebacker Brian Asamoah II, acknowledged the challenge of balancing flag football aspirations with NFL demands. Asamoah emphasized the need for respect towards existing flag football athletes, while also advocating for equal opportunities for all players.
