The National Football League (NFL) has officially cleared the path for its players to participate in flag football during the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. The resolution, passed unanimously by the league owners on Tuesday, allows a maximum of one player from each team and designated international players to compete.
According to Commissioner Roger Goodell, this is “a great opportunity for the sport” that will help make NFL football a global sport for men and women of all ages and backgrounds. Troy Vincent, executive vice president of football operations, added that this marks a significant step in bringing America’s greatest game to the global stage.
The International Olympic Committee had previously voted to add flag football to the 2028 Summer Olympics, paving the way for this historic opportunity. The NFL will now work with the Players Association and national governing bodies to finalize arrangements for the event.
Key details still need to be worked out, including injury protection, salary cap credits, medical standards, and scheduling conflicts. However, many players are excited about the prospect of representing their country on the world stage. Justin Jefferson, a Minnesota Vikings Pro Bowler, expressed his enthusiasm, saying that competing in the Olympics would be a dream come true.
The 2028 Summer Olympics will take place from July 14-30, and NFL players are eagerly anticipating the opportunity to compete for gold.
