NFL Rule Changes Aim to Crack Down on Tush Pushes and Overtime Rules

The Green Bay Packers are pushing for a rule change that would ban the “tush push” play, which has become popular among teams like their NFC East rivals, the Philadelphia Eagles. However, other teams have also proposed changes.

The Packers’ proposal aims to prohibit an offensive player from pushing a teammate who was lined up directly behind the snapper and receives the snap immediately after it’s handed off. If this rule is implemented, players found guilty would face penalties.

In addition to the tush push ban, the Detroit Lions are seeking to change Rule 8, Section 4, which currently allows for an automatic first down as a penalty for defensive holding and illegal contact. The Lions believe that this penalty is too harsh.

The Eagles also have a proposal on the table, aiming to align postseason and regular-season overtime rules. This would grant both teams possession of the ball regardless of the outcome of the first possession, with a 15-minute overtime period in the regular season.

Wild-card teams are also advocating for better seeding, proposing that they be seeded higher based on their record compared to division champions. The current system can lead to mismatches between top-seeded teams and lower-ranked wild-cards.

These changes will be up for vote at the annual NFL meeting, which begins on March 30.
