The NFL has informed its teams of a salary cap range for 2025, set between $277.5 million and $281.5 million. This marks the second consecutive year the cap will rise significantly. Last season’s increase was the largest in history, rising from $224.8 million to $255.4 million.
The cap is calculated annually using a formula tied to league revenues, which have increased due to new media rights deals. However, the number remains uncertain as the league and NFL Players Association (NFLPA) continue negotiations on adjustments to the formula.
A smoothing adjustment was made last year to avoid a significant difference between two consecutive years’ increases. The NFLPA agreed to this change to maintain fairness for players. Now, the league is waiting to hear back from the union regarding how much of an additional $4.5 million should be added to this year’s cap.
The negotiations with the NFLPA are expected to conclude next week, at which time the final salary cap figure will be determined. The new league year and free agency will begin on March 12.
