NFL Teams Cut 37 Players Per Club Before Roster Deadline

The next few days are crucial for NFL teams as they finalize their 53-man rosters, a process that involves cutting nearly half of their off-season camp roster. This year’s deadline is Tuesday at 4 p.m. EST, when all 32 clubs must submit their initial 53-man squads.

According to the NFL, approximately 37 players from each team will be cut or waived, totaling around 1,184 league-wide. However, some players on injured reserve lists, such as Physically Unable to Perform (PUP), Non-Football injury/illness (NFI), and Injured Reserve, do not count against the 53-man roster.

Players who are not on these lists face uncertainty about their futures with their teams. Tight end James Mitchell, who was drafted by the Detroit Lions in 2022, is one such player. He has been through this process before, having been cut twice and eventually making it to the practice squad.

Linebacker Jon Rhattigan, a veteran of multiple roster cuts, advises his peers to focus on football and not let the business aspect of the sport weigh them down. “It’s out of your control,” he said. “You have to stay calm and be ready for any move.”

The Panthers’ coaching staff, led by Dave Canales, is taking a similar approach. They will evaluate film and make decisions at the end of next week, giving players every last ounce of opportunity from this time.

For rookie running back Trevor Etienne, who has yet to experience a roster cut-down day himself, veteran advice is invaluable. “It’s like you really can’t control that, so just worry about the things you can control,” he said.

As teams navigate this critical period, Canales emphasizes the importance of passion, love for the game, and commitment to staying ready in case another opportunity arises. The coaching staff hopes to help players achieve a “football life” by providing care, coaching, and challenges that will prepare them for the future.
