NFL Weighs Ban on Tush Push Play Amid Safety Concerns

The National Football League’s Annual League Meeting is set to address a proposal to ban the tush push play, which has sparked debate over player safety concerns. The Green Bay Packers submitted the proposal in February, citing medical professionals’ warnings about catastrophic injuries. However, some coaches, including Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott and Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst, oppose the ban.

The tush push is a play where teammates immediately push the ball carrier forward, potentially resembling rugby more than modern football. Coaches argue that reducing large collisions between athletes would be beneficial for safety. McDermott stated his concern lies in the health and safety of players, particularly at compromising physical angles. Gutekunst emphasized that the play’s effectiveness is not as crucial as player welfare.

The Bills had a successful rate of conversion when attempting the tush push, but also suffered a setback when it was stopped on a key fourth down in their AFC Championship Game loss to the Chiefs. The Packers have occasionally used this play, often with assistance from teammates behind the ball carrier. Despite its effectiveness in short-yardage situations, some coaches believe it poses unnecessary risks.

NFL owners will vote on the proposal Tuesday, requiring 24 out of 32 votes (75%) to pass.
