NFLPA Chief Resigns Amid Criticism Over Leadership and Collusion Allegations

NFL Players Association chief strategy officer JC Tretter has announced his resignation from the position, withdrawing himself from consideration for the union’s interim executive director role. The 34-year-old had been player president since 2020 and was seen as a potential candidate to succeed outgoing leader Lloyd Howell.

Criticism of Tretter mounted on social media after he was nominated, with several former players questioning his leadership and judgment. Former linebacker Will Compton called the union “the dumbest in sports,” citing Tretter’s role in hiring Howell and sweeping under-the-rug issues such as guaranteed contracts and collusion allegations.

Tretter had previously led a vote to change the NFLPA constitution, making the search and election process more confidential. However, his comments on running backs faking injuries were seen as a violation of the collective bargaining agreement, leading to a lawsuit filed by the union against the NFL.

The decision was kept under wraps due to a confidentiality agreement between the NFLPA and the league. Tretter denied any involvement in the agreement but has now announced he can no longer continue in his role.

The board of player representatives will meet on Sunday night to discuss candidates for interim director, with Don Davis, Zamir Cobb, and Ned Ehrlich among those being considered. The selection process for the next executive director is also set to be discussed.
