The National Hockey League (NHL) and the players’ association are negotiating a potential increase to an 84-game regular season during their collective bargaining agreement talks. This would mark a return to the league’s previous schedule format, which featured two neutral-site games in 1992-1994.
Sources indicate that the additional two games would maintain the current division rival matchup format while allowing for more contests between teams within each division. However, there is concern among players about “wear and tear” from the added regular-season games.
The current CBA expires on September 15, 2026. Other key issues being discussed include adjusting the team’s use of long-term injured reserve salary cap exemptions during the playoffs.
NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman characterized the talks with the players as “constructive, professional and cordial,” stating that there is more than a year to go before an agreement can be reached.
