NHTSA Accepts Tesla’s Over-the-Air Recall Fix

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has finally acknowledged that some recalls will be fixed with Over-the-Air software updates, marking a significant shift in the way recalls are handled. This decision comes after Tesla fans and even CEO Elon Musk have called for updated terminology.

Tesla recently initiated a recall of 694,304 vehicles across its lineup to fix an issue with a non-illuminated tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS). The problem affects 2024 Cybertrucks, 2017-2025 Model 3s, and 2020-2025 Model Y vehicles. If left unchecked, it could fail to warn drivers of low tire pressure.

The NHTSA has stated that the issue will be resolved with a software update, which Tesla has promised will remedy the problem without requiring physical service visits. As of December 13, there have been no reported injuries or accidents stemming from this issue.

This move is seen as a significant step in the right direction, as it aligns with Musk’s efforts to improve recall terminology over the past few years. With this change, more recalls will be resolved using software updates, making the process more efficient and convenient for consumers.
