Niantic Acquired by Scopely in $3.5 Billion Deal

Pokémon GO fans are concerned after mobile giant Scopely acquired Niantic for $3.5 billion. The acquisition has led some players to transfer their Pokémon to the cloud service Pokémon Home, which allows them to safely store and manage their mons across different compatible games.

Niantic founder John Hanke reassured fans that Scopely “cares deeply about its player communities and game-making teams.” However, some concerned fans have taken steps to ensure their hard-earned captures remain safe in Home. Meanwhile, Pokémon GO lead Ed Wu called the partnership a “positive step” for the game’s future.

Pokémon Home is a resource introduced in 2020 that allows players to unite all their Pokémon from across different games. The service offers a centralized way to collect and trade Pokémon, as well as transfer mons between games. Despite reassurances from both Niantic and Scopely teams, some fans are transferring their Pokémon to Home “just in case.”

The acquisition comes after Pokémon GO’s unprecedented rise to fame in 2016, earning over 228 million downloads within the first few months of its launch. The game’s future remains uncertain, but fans can take comfort knowing that their Pokémon will be safe and secure with Pokémon Home.

With the entire Pokémon GO team staying together through this partnership, fans can look forward to a positive outcome for the beloved game. As Ed Wu stated, “I truly believe the best is yet to come.”
