Niantic Sold to Saudi-Owned Company in $3.85 Billion Deal

Niantic, the developer of popular mobile games Pokémon Go, Pikmin Bloom, and Monster Hunter Now, has sold these titles to Scopely, a subsidiary of Savvy Games, which is owned by the Saudi Arabian government’s Public Investment Fund. The deal, worth $3.85 billion, includes two other apps, Campfire and Wayfarer. Campfire enables in-game meetups in real-world locations, while Wayfarer uses Niantic game players to map real-world locations for Pokémon Go. Niantic retains ownership of Ingress and Peridot. Concerns over the handling of location data from Pokémon Go’s 100 million users remain unclear after no specific details were provided by Scopely or Savvy Games in their joint blog posts on the deal.
