HBO has revealed its first image of new cast member Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, the beloved half-giant from the “Harry Potter” series. The announcement comes ahead of the show’s production start, which began at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden on Monday and is expected to last until 2026.
Frost takes on the iconic role previously played by Robbie Coltrane in the film franchise. He is joined by Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley, among other cast members including John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore and Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall.
Directed by Mark Mylod and written by Francesca Gardiner, the series will premiere in 2027 on HBO and HBO Max. The show is being produced in association with Brontë Film and TV and Warner Bros. Television, with executive producers including J.K. Rowling, Neil Blair, Ruth Kenley-Letts, and David Heyman.
The casting decision has sparked mixed reactions, with some expressing disappointment over the recasting of Frost as Hagrid, who is noticeably smaller than his book counterpart. Others have praised the show’s bold approach to casting, particularly in the role of Snape.
