Nigeria Church Clash Leaves 3 Dead in Same-Sex Controversy

Clashes between two Methodist churches in Nigeria have left three people dead, including a young man and two children, amidst disagreements over same-sex relationships. The incident occurred in the village of Bunkabu, Taraba State, following a decision by the United Methodist Church (UMC) to allow same-sex relationships within its denomination.

The UMC’s move was opposed by the Global Methodist Church of Nigeria (GMCN), a conservative breakaway group. Authorities have shut down churches in Munga Dosso in an effort to de-escalate tensions, but violence continued, with gunfire reported at a United Methodist Church. Ten church members were injured during the clashes.

UMC bishops condemned the killings, calling for justice and peace, while urging the GMCN to seek accountability for the lives lost. The GMCN expressed sorrow over the incident but blamed an “unknown person” for sparking the unrest. Authorities are investigating the incident while appealing for calm among both denominations.
