Nigeria has confirmed that more than 35 jihadis were killed in a recent air strike near the border with Cameroon. The attack was carried out close to where Islamist militants had gathered, sparking violent clashes across West Africa.
The Nigerian military stated that they acted on intelligence from multiple sources and executed precision strikes, engaging the terrorists and neutralizing over 35 fighters at four assembly areas. Ground troops in the area later confirmed that the situation had been stabilized.
The attack is part of Nigeria’s efforts to combat the resurgence of violence in the region. The country has seen an uptick in attacks by the Islamist group Boko Haram and its rival, ISWAP, which have targeted military facilities and civilians alike.
Nigeria’s government has been criticized for failing to bring these problems under control. However, they recently sealed a deal with the US State Department to purchase $346 million worth of weapons subject to approval from Congress.
The conflict in Nigeria has resulted in over 40,000 deaths since the fighting began, with 2 million people forced to flee their homes. The situation remains dire, with armed “bandit” gangs also causing trouble in rural areas.
