Nikon has released its latest prime lens, the 35mm f/1.2 S, which boasts exceptional optics and fast aperture capabilities. With an 82mm filter diameter and weighing 37.4 ounces, this lens is substantial, but its premium quality justifies the $2,799 price tag.
The lens features a range of advanced coating technologies, including Meso Amorphous coatings and Nano-Crystal coatings, which effectively control flare and ghosting. Wide-open, the lens delivers excellent contrast and minimal ghosting when pointed towards the sun. Stopped down, some ghosting is more apparent, but it’s still manageable.
The focus is accurate and sprightly, thanks to twin STM motors driving the glass elements. The aperture design features 11 blades, maintaining a circular opening as much as possible. This results in shallow focus with distinct separation between subject and background.
Specular highlights form pleasant cat’s eye shapes at f/1.2, while backgrounds remain smooth and natural-looking. Even at wider apertures, the bokeh is pleasant, with round and even-looking highlights. The lens also excels in controlling longitudinal chromatic aberrations, which are often a concern with fast glass.
While not ideal for some photographers, this lens is undeniable optically superb, making it an optical gem to shoot with. Its high price may be daunting, but for those willing to invest, the Nikon 35mm f/1.2 S offers exceptional performance and image quality.
