Nikon Unveils High-End 28-135mm f/4 PZ Zoom for Professional Video Productions

Nikon has officially introduced its latest addition to its Z mount lineup – the Nikkor Z 28-135mm f/4 PZ motorized zoom lens. Designed for professional video productions with the Z6 III, Z8, and Z9 mirrorless cameras, this lens offers an extended focal range of 28-135mm, a constant f/4 aperture, and a parfocal design.

The Nikkor Z 28-135mm f/4 PZ features an advanced optical construction of 18 elements in 13 groups, including specialized glass elements to reduce chromatic aberrations. The lens also boasts a 9-blade circular aperture diaphragm for smooth bokeh transitions and a compact size considering its specifications.

In terms of video production, this lens offers great versatility with numerous manual controls, including a zoom lever with 11 speed settings, two customizable buttons, and a configurable control ring. However, it lacks a dedicated aperture ring, instead featuring a customizable control ring.

The lens is designed for gimbal use, with minimal focus breathing effect and parfocal design, ensuring smooth transitions between focal lengths. The autofocus system relies on a stepping motor (STM) for fast and precise focusing, while the constant f/4 aperture helps maintain image quality.

Available in April 2025 for $2596, the Nikkor Z 28-135mm f/4 PZ is targeted at demanding videographers and solo filmmakers. Its price point may seem moderate given its specifications, but it does evoke some comparison with Sony’s FE PZ 28-135mm f/4 G OSS, which shares a similar form factor and features.

Despite the similarities, Nikon’s new lens offers many unique benefits for professional video productions, making it an excellent addition to its lineup.
