Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor on Music’s Decline and Return to Form

Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor has expressed his disillusionment with the music industry, citing a decline in the importance of music and its consumption. In a conversation with producer Rick Rubin, Reznor stated that music used to be the primary focus of his life, but now it feels like a disposable commodity.

Reznor also miss the critical attention music once received, feeling that the cultural validation he sought through reviews is no longer reliable. He believes that the current environment makes it challenging to put out new music into the world. However, scoring for films and TV has provided an outlet for him to feel vital and challenged.

Despite his growing shift in interest towards film scoring, Reznor hinted at returning to Nine Inch Nails’ musical output. In a recent conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, he stated that they are taking inspiration from their scoring work and funneling it into a new Nine Inch Nails project. The project’s details remain unclear, but Reznor’s renewed conviction is likely welcome news to the band’s fans.

Reznor’s comments suggest that while he has been inspired by film scoring, his heart remains with Nine Inch Nails. With their upcoming project, Reznor and collaborator Atticus Ross aim to bring a new energy to the band’s music, which has been relatively dormant since 2020.
