Nine Indian Miners Trapped as Flooded Coal Mine Becomes Deadly Nightmare

Nine Indian miners are trapped inside a flooded coal mine in Assam’s Dima Hasao district, with three feared dead and six others still missing. Rescue teams from the army, national, and state disaster relief forces are working through the night to reach the stranded workers.

The mine became flooded when internal water channels were hit, flooding it yesterday. Authorities say the flood was caused by an accident involving miners who probably triggered a water channel.

Rescue efforts have been underway since Monday, with divers, helicopters, and engineers deployed to aid in the rescue mission. Three bodies have been spotted but not yet recovered.

This is not an isolated incident, as coal mine-related disasters are common in India’s remote northeastern region. In 2019, at least 15 miners were killed when an illegal mine in Meghalaya was flooded by a nearby river.
