A Russian drone attack on a civilian minibus in north-eastern Ukraine has killed nine people and injured seven others. The attack occurred just hours after Russia and Ukraine held their first face-to-face talks in over three years, resulting in a prisoner swap agreement. Ukrainian President Volodymr Zelensky described the strike as “a deliberate killing of civilians,” while Russia claimed it targeted a military staging area.
The minibus was traveling to Sumy, the regional capital near Russia’s border, when it was hit by a Russian Lancet drone at 06:17 local time on Saturday. A family of three, including a mother and father with their daughter, were among those killed. Regional officials said the attack was “inhumane.”
The recent talks in Istanbul did not lead to a breakthrough in ending the war, but a prisoner swap agreement was reached. Ukraine has called for a full and unconditional ceasefire, while Russia remains elusive. The US believes that progress can only be made if President Donald Trump and Putin hold face-to-face talks.
