The Trump administration’s 2026 budget proposal has led to a funding freeze for nine Wisconsin clinics that provide HIV testing services. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) had awarded $400 million nationwide for five years, with Wisconsin receiving $1.9 million in the first year. Clinics are now seeking alternative funding sources as the future of their grants remains uncertain.
Affected clinics include Brady East Sexual Health Clinic, Diverse and Resilient, Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin, and six others. The funding freeze has left clinics scrambling to maintain services, with some relying on emergency funds and other grants. A spokesperson for Brady East said they were set to receive $50,000 per year but will use alternative funds to keep free services accessible.
The pause in funding is concerning for the community, with advocates highlighting the need for continued support in addressing health disparities and violence. “The pause in funding undermines efforts to address the health disparities and violence our community faces,” said Chris Allen, president and CEO of Diverse and Resilient.
The clinics are now waiting on word from the CDC about their future funding, and officials are working with government leaders to ensure that testing services remain available.
