Nintendo has released a statement in response to criticism over its Switch Donkey Kong remaster, Donkey Kong Country Returns HD, which fails to credit the original developers. The game was ported by Forever Entertainment, but Retro Studios creators are not named in the end credits.
Instead, players see a message stating that the game is based on the work of “the original development staff.” A Nintendo spokesperson said the company values the contributions of “all staff” involved in making or contributing to a game’s creation. However, they failed to explain why Retro Studios developers were not included in the credits.
This is not the first time Nintendo has omitted the original developers from remaster credits, as seen in its handling of Switch port Metroid Prime Remastered last year. The issue of proper credit for developers remains ongoing, with some companies facing criticism for their practices.
The International Game Developers Association (IDGA) guidelines advise that anyone working on a game’s development for 30 days or more must be credited. However, there is currently no enforceable regulation beyond these guidelines.
