Nintendo Patents Reveal Mouse-Like Joy-Con Controllers for Switch 2

Nintendo has filed patents that hint at its exploration of mouse-like functionality for its upcoming Switch 2 console. The patents show the Joy-Con controllers sliding along a surface, much like a computer mouse, and potentially connecting to accessories magnetically.

The patents also suggest that Nintendo is working on a new controller design with a larger grip, which could be used in conjunction with the existing Joy-Cons. This hybrid controller would allow for traditional console gameplay while still incorporating mouse-like functionality.

Another patent shows a wrist strap attachment that can slot into the Joy-Con, and it’s likely that this feature will also be available on the Switch 2 console. The wrist strap could potentially attach magnetically to the Joy-Con, as well as to the console itself.

The patents also show a potential controller dock where the Joy-Con can be laid down and charged. While these designs may not necessarily become part of the final product, they provide an early glimpse into Nintendo’s plans for the Switch 2.

It’s worth noting that Nintendo has hinted at the possibility of mouse-like functionality in its recent teaser video for the Switch 2. The company is set to reveal more about the console on April 2nd during a Switch 2-focused Nintendo Direct, and it’s likely that these patents will play a role in the announcement.
