Nintendo has lifted a ban from its online services for a user who played second-hand Nintendo Switch 1 games on their new console. The user, identified as @GameRiserUK in the UK, was blocked from accessing multiplayer and the eShop after playing games purchased from a third-party retailer.
The issue arose due to the Switch 2’s Nintendo Account system, which ties games to a user’s account and region. When the user played second-hand Switch 1 games linked to a previous owner’s account from a different region, the system flagged them as “unauthorized” due to mismatched account data.
However, Nintendo reversed the ban just hours later after the user contacted support. The company apologized for the error, citing a “miscommunication” in its backward compatibility system. Nintendo clarified that second-hand games are permitted if properly transferred or reset, advising users to verify account regions.
The incident has drawn criticism of the Switch 2’s strict digital rights management, which some see as too restrictive. A Nintendo UK spokesperson said the company is refining its systems to ensure seamless backward compatibility.
