Nintendo is seeking a California court’s assistance in uncovering the identity of the person behind last year’s massive Pokémon data breach, known as “Teraleak.” The incident saw sensitive information, including game source code and concept art, leaked online. Nintendo has filed a subpoena request with Discord to obtain the user’s name, address, phone number, and email address.
The subpoena was issued in April by James D. Berkley, an attorney for Nintendo, who stated that the aim is “to obtain the identity of the Discord user ‘GameFreakOUT,’ who posted infringing content.” The leaked data was published on October 12, 2024, but Game Freak announced a hack just four days earlier.
Nintendo has a history of taking leakers to court, most notably with Pokémon Sword and Shield strategy guide photos. The company is likely to pursue legal action against the Teraleak leaker, given the sensitive information allegedly obtained by the individual.
