Nintendo Switch 2 Dev Kits Lack 4K Output, Contradicting Earlier Reports

A recent report from Tom Henderson on Insider Gaming Weekly podcast has sparked confusion among gamers regarding the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. According to Henderson, some dev kits issued to developers lack a 4K output. However, it’s unclear whether these kits accurately represent the final specs of the console.

Nintendo never announced that its new console would feature 4K capabilities, and previous leaks speculated about the dock’s ability to support a 4K signal. Instead, upscaling technology would likely be used to enhance visuals from lower resolutions like 720p/1080p to 1440p or 4K.

The lack of 4K output on dev kits may negatively impact marketing for the console, especially as prices have fallen and 4K TVs become increasingly common. Gamers also expect Nintendo to focus on game development rather than streaming media capabilities.

To put this into perspective, earlier dev kits had varying levels of power, with some iterations designed specifically for handheld or docked modes. The reported 4K specs contradict a previous insider report from NateTheHate, who claimed to have seen The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild running on a Switch 2 at 4K/60 fps.

Nintendo is expected to provide clarity on which reports are accurate during its upcoming April 2nd Nintendo Direct presentation.
