A report from Insider Gaming revealed details about Nintendo’s launch software strategy for the upcoming Switch 2 console. According to John Linneman, a renowned gaming expert from Digital Foundry, many third-party developers do not have access to development kits, despite the console’s predicted release in June. This has sparked concerns that the launch might be delayed.
Linneman stated that he heard from numerous developers at GDC 2025, who still do not have access to development hardware. Nintendo allegedly chose to restrict kit distribution to only a select few, including top-tier developers. The decision is believed to prevent leaks and ensure the console’s reputation is built on high-quality titles.
This strategy mirrors Nintendo’s approach when launching the original Switch, where the eShop initially featured a curated selection of well-regarded games. It is likely that Nintendo aims to replicate this success with the new console by carefully selecting launch titles.
The low number of developers who have access to development kits raises concerns about the console’s release date. If most third-party developers are still without kits, it is unlikely that they can produce high-quality launch games in time for a June or July release. This suggests that the Switch 2 might be delayed until the holiday season, possibly September or October.
The Nintendo Direct Eve event on the other side of the Atlantic is likely to provide further insight into the company’s plans and strategy for the new console.
