Nintendo has hinted that some popular Switch games will receive enhanced versions for the upcoming Switch 2 console, in addition to being playable through backward compatibility. The clarification comes from a small print note on the company’s new Virtual Game Card system, which mentions “Switch 2 Edition games” that are exclusive to the new console.
This suggests that Nintendo is planning to release cross-gen versions of popular titles, such as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, that will run natively on the Switch 2 console. This would enable enhanced performance and features, setting a precedent for the industry in a move expected from Sony and Microsoft.
However, it remains unclear whether Nintendo will charge extra for these enhanced games, with Sony charging for some PlayStation 5 upgrades of PlayStation 4 titles and Microsoft offering Xbox Series X Enhanced versions of Xbox One games for free. As the Switch 2’s full features and capabilities become clear, gamers can expect more information on how the new console will handle game compatibility and performance.
