Nintendo has filed updated patents that shed light on its plans for the upcoming Switch 2 console, particularly in regards to artificial intelligence (AI) upscaling technology. The new details reveal how the system will generate higher-resolution gaming images without requiring more powerful hardware.
The upgraded Nvidia Tegra processor inside the Switch 2 is expected to deliver significant performance gains compared to the original Switch. However, it may struggle to consistently output 1080p resolution in handheld mode for demanding games. This is where AI upscaling comes into play.
A newly published patent outlines a neural network-based system that can convert lower-resolution images (540p) to higher resolutions (1080p). The technology, similar to Nvidia’s DLSS, uses trained algorithms to enhance image quality. However, it remains unclear whether Nintendo will utilize its own proprietary upscaling tech or integrate third-party solutions.
The patent also confirms that the Switch 2’s native display will be 1080p, and this feature could provide significant benefits for original Switch owners who play games on the new console. The upgrade might even improve battery life in handheld mode.
While some may expect the Switch 2 to deliver 4K gaming capabilities when docked, it seems that goal is ambitious for a portable console. Instead, AI upscaling technology could enable improved visuals and potentially even shorter battery drain times.
