Nintendo’s Switch Sales Remain Steady Despite Declines

Nintendo’s latest financial results show a decline in sales for its dedicated console business, with a 31.7% year-over-year decrease in revenue. The main culprit is the aging Nintendo Switch, which is entering its eighth year of existence.

However, there are signs that Nintendo is still on track to smash a massive sales record it has been chasing for nearly two decades. The company’s user base remains strong, with 129 million active users by the end of December 2024. This number is impressive, considering the console is almost at its lifecycle peak.

The positive highlight from the report is Nintendo’s commitment to releasing first-party games, such as Donkey Kong Country Returns HD and Mario Party Jamboree, which keep users engaged. With a total of 150.86 million units sold across the Switch family, the company is getting close to becoming Nintendo’s all-time best-selling console.

The Switch is on track to beat its rival, the Nintendo DS, but it faces an even steeper challenge in surpassing Sony’s PlayStation 2, which holds the record with over 160 million lifetime sales. Despite this, Nintendo remains optimistic about its prospects and is gearing up for the release of its next-generation console, the Switch 2, which promises to launch in 2025.
