Nissan Bets on Hybrid EV Technology for Turnaround

Nissan, Japan’s troubled automaker, is turning to hybrid electric vehicle (EV) technology, known as e-Power, to help it recover from a $4.5 billion loss last fiscal year.

The e-Power system combines an electric motor and gasoline engine, similar to Toyota’s Prius, but without the need to switch between them during driving. This results in a quiet and smooth ride.

The technology offers several advantages, including not needing to be charged like traditional EVs do. Owners can simply fuel up at a gas station, eliminating the risk of running out of charge.

Nissan is facing significant challenges, particularly in the North American market due to President Trump’s tariff policies. To achieve a turnaround, the company is working on reducing costs and redefining its lineup.

As part of this effort, Nissan announced plans to slash 20,000 jobs and reduce its auto plant numbers from 17 to 10. The new e-Power technology will be introduced in models such as the Rogue in the US market.

Analysts warn that Nissan is at risk of running out of cash and may need a partner or sell assets, including its headquarters building or Japan plants. However, the company’s pioneering EV technology, including the popular Leaf model, may provide a foundation for future growth.
