Nissan Cuts Shifts, Offers Buyouts to US Workers Amid $2.6 Billion Cost-Cut Plan

Nissan Motor has announced plans to cut shifts and offer buyouts to workers at three U.S. factories as part of its bid to slash $2.6 billion in costs globally. The company will start reducing one shift at its Smyrna, Tennessee factory producing the Rogue sports utility vehicle in April, while cutting another shift at its Canton, Mississippi plant for the Altima sedan from September.

The move is aimed at reducing production capacity and cutting jobs as Nissan suffers from weak demand for some of its aging models. The company had previously reported a third reduction in output at its Kyushu factory in Japan due to similar market trends.

Nissan will not conduct involuntary layoffs, but may cut up to 1,500 jobs with the move. The company employed over 11,700 workers at the three U.S. plants as of end-2024. This plan is part of Nissan’s broader efforts to reduce costs and improve efficiency after announcing a global restructuring aimed at cutting 9,000 jobs worldwide.
