Nissan Cuts US Production, Offers Buyouts to Tennessee and Mississippi Workers

Nissan is cutting production lines in its US plants in Tennessee and Mississippi, and offering voluntary buyout packages to factory workers. The company aims to reduce production capacity by 20% and cut 9,000 global jobs.

The decision comes after underperforming sales in China and the US, as well as falling profits in the first half of fiscal year 2024. Nissan will slash shifts on two lines – the Rogue assembly line in Smyrna, Tennessee, and the Altima assembly line in Canton, Mississippi – but keep other lines fully staffed.

The company has not specified how many employees will be targeted with the buyouts. However, Japan-based newspaper Yomiuri Shimbun reported that between 1,500 to 2,000 US factory employees may be cut this year.

Nissan’s Senior Vice President of Manufacturing and Supply Chain Management David Johnson said the voluntary separation packages offer employees an opportunity to take early retirement or pursue new career directions. The move aims to prevent layoffs and is seen as a win-win for both Nissan and its employees.
