New Jersey lawmakers are rallying against the implementation of congestion pricing in New York City, despite a federal judge’s ruling that more detail on environmental impacts must be provided. A press conference is planned for Thursday in Fort Lee, where Congressman Josh Gottheimer will stand with local representatives and community members to highlight the recent decision.
The Federal Highway Administration must provide more information on how to mitigate pollution in North Jersey communities, such as Bergen County, the judge ruled. However, MTA lawyers claim that the ruling does not block congestion pricing from going into effect, and they plan to proceed with the plan starting Sunday morning.
New Jersey lawmakers have also filed for a temporary restraining order to stop the plan, which could give opponents an opportunity to halt it altogether. President-elect Trump has already expressed opposition to the plan, stating he would end it when he takes office.
The judge’s decision came after reviewing the Federal Highway Administration’s mitigation strategy, which allocated tens of millions of dollars to address air pollution in New York City but did not provide specifics on how to mitigate the impact on North Jersey communities. The court ruled that the agency acted arbitrarily and capriciously in its determination.
