North Korea has started dismantling some propaganda loudspeakers along the border with South Korea, according to the South Korean military. This move comes after Seoul began removing its own speakers that played anti-North Korea broadcasts. The decision follows a change in government under President Lee Jae Myung, who aims to ease tensions with Pyongyang.
Since taking office, Lee’s liberal administration has taken steps to reduce tensions, including switching off propaganda broadcasts criticizing the North Korean regime. South Korean authorities have also begun removing loudspeakers that played anti-North Korea messages along the border.
The development marks a shift in the long-standing tradition of cross-border propaganda broadcasts through loudspeakers. The countries remain technically at war after the 1950-53 Korean War, and relations have deteriorated in recent years. However, Lee’s efforts aim to revive stalled dialogue between the two nations.
