No. 1 Auburn Stuns No. 2 Alabama in Thrilling 94-85 Victory

Auburn’s Bruce Pearl promised his team that they would remember this game, and the Tigers made history by defeating No. 2 Alabama 94-85 on Saturday night at Coleman Coliseum.

The Tigers led from start to finish, with Johni Broome leading six players in double figures. Broome scored a game-high 19 points, grabbed 14 rebounds, and dished out 6 assists. Denver Jones added 16 points, while Miles Kelly and Chad Baker-Mazara each chipped in with 15.

Alabama’s Mark Sears led the Crimson Tide with 18 points, but struggled from beyond the arc, making only 2 of 11 three-pointers. The Tigers held Alabama to just 5-for-26 on long-range shots.

Auburn took a nine-point lead into halftime and extended it to 14 points early in the second half, before Alabama made a late push. However, the Tigers responded with several three-pointers from Tahaad Pettiford and Baker-Mazara, and a 7-0 run sealed the win.

Pearl praised his team’s balance and depth, saying that “so many guys contributed” to the victory. He also credited Denver Jones with making Mark Sears tough to play against, and said that Auburn’s early success on offense was crucial in stifling Alabama’s momentum.

The win improves Auburn’s record to 7-0 in SEC road games and 23-2 overall, while dropping Alabama to 21-4 and 10-2 in the conference. The Tigers return to Neville Arena for their next three games, starting with a Wednesday matchup against Arkansas on ESPN.
