No Safe Level of Alcohol Consumption, Expert Warns

Dr. Faiz Bhora, a leading expert in surgery, has issued a warning about the dangers of alcohol consumption, stating that there is no safe level of drinking. Even small amounts of alcohol daily may increase the risk of developing cancer.

According to the US Surgeon General’s latest advisory, moderate drinking can be misleading. The guidelines suggest limiting daily intake to two or fewer drinks for men and one drink for women, but the surgeon general advises against even small amounts.

Studies have found a clear link between alcohol consumption and an increased risk of seven types of cancers, including breast cancer. Dr. Bhora explains that alcohol causes oxidative stress and impairs DNA repair, leading to cell cycle dysregulation and cancer formation.

The expert suggests updating warning labels on alcoholic beverages to include cancer risk. Currently, labels mainly warn against drinking during pregnancy or driving under the influence. However, shares of major beer manufacturers initially dropped after the advisory due to increased scrutiny.

Bhora argues that social pressures are preventing people from acknowledging the true risks of alcohol consumption. He believes it’s essential to reevaluate the idea of a “safe” daily glass of wine and instead focus on reducing overall intake.

The expert recommends trying to limit drinking to only weekends or eliminating it completely if desired. Bhora shares that many colleagues who have stopped or reduced their drinking have reported feeling more liberated, having clearer thought processes, and being more productive.
