No Surge in Respiratory Illnesses Says WHO

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has reported that there have been no unusual outbreak patterns of human metapneumovirus (HMPV) globally. In its latest disease outbreak report, the organisation stated that Chinese health officials have not reported any emergency declarations or responses triggered due to HMPV.

The WHO continues to monitor respiratory illnesses worldwide through collaborative surveillance systems and provides updates as needed. According to data published by China up to December 29, 2024, acute respiratory infections have increased during recent weeks. However, the organisation notes that this increase is within the expected range for the winter season in the northern hemisphere.

Influenza is currently the most commonly detected respiratory pathogen in China, affecting people with acute respiratory infections. HMPV is a common virus found to circulate in many countries from winter to spring, although not all countries test and publish data on trends in HMPV.

While some cases of HMPV can be hospitalised due to bronchitis or pneumonia, most infected individuals experience mild upper respiratory symptoms similar to the common cold and recover within a few days. The WHO advises states to strengthen awareness on HMPV to manage expectations amid international interest in potential increases in respiratory virus transmission.
