No Team Has Won Three Consecutive Super Bowls in NFL History

The Kansas City Chiefs’ loss on Sunday marks an important milestone in NFL history – no team has ever won three consecutive Super Bowls. This achievement is all the more remarkable given that there can’t be a three-peat next year, either.

The NFL stands out among major American sports leagues for this distinction. In contrast, several other leagues have had teams achieve multiple championships: the NBA’s Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers both won three consecutive titles (1991-1993 and 2000-2002 respectively), while baseball’s Oakland Athletics and New York Yankees achieved back-to-back wins in the World Series from 1972 to 1974 and 1998 to 2000. The Stanley Cup has seen four-peats by teams such as the Montreal Canadiens (1976-1979) and New York Islanders (1980-1983).

One active three-peat is held by the Birmingham Stallions in the United Football League, but this achievement predates their recent championship wins in 2022, 2023, and 2024. The Green Bay Packers have also won multiple championships, with three titles from 1929 to 1931 and two more after Super Bowls I and II.

The modern NFL’s emphasis on parity means that achieving a three-peat is extremely difficult. Despite coming closest in the Chiefs’ loss, they still failed to secure back-to-back wins followed by another championship, leaving their quest for history unfulfilled.
