Bob Odenkirk reprises his role as Hutch Mansell in the highly anticipated sequel Nobody 2, hitting theaters on August 15th. Four years after his action-packed debut, Odenkirk returns as a suburban husband and father turned deadly hitman to pay off a debt. This time around, Hutch takes his family on vacation, only to find themselves caught up in a dangerous criminal syndicate.
Directed by Timo Tjahjanto, the film boasts John Wick screenwriter Derek Kolstad’s script and John Wick co-director David Leitch as a producer. The result is an action-packed ride that skillfully balances humor with intense violence. Odenkirk’s performance remains at the center of the series, bringing warmth and disappointment to his portrayal of Hutch.
The film’s tone shifts into more farcical territory, with extreme violence and cartoonish booby traps. While some may find this approach entertaining, it loses some of the specific vibes that made the first film work well. The supporting cast shines, particularly Connie Nielsen as Hutch’s wife and Gage Munroe as their son.
However, Sharon Stone’s portrayal of the diabolical crime boss Lendina falls short, feeling stilted and mannered. Instead, notable performances come from John Ortiz and Colin Hanks as locals caught in the syndicate’s web. The film’s action sequences are still thrilling, with impressive fight scenes showcasing Odenkirk’s impressive stunt training.
Tjahjanto’s direction adds a stylized feel to the film, complementing its heightened approach. With an action-packed finale showdown set amidst an amusement park, Nobody 2 delivers on its promise of entertainment, even if it doesn’t quite live up to its predecessor.
