Denmark, Norway, and Sweden have agreed to jointly finance a $500 million US weapons package for Ukraine, including Patriot air defense system munitions and anti-tank systems. The Swedish government will commit $275 million, which is in line with US President Donald Trump’s previous decision to supply Kyiv with “defence material” as part of several support packages.
NATO is coordinating the American military aid push, with funding provided by other allied nations. Ukraine Minister of Defence Denys Shmyhal has thanked Sweden for joining the Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List (PURL), a joint initiative between the US, NATO allies, and Ukraine to fund DoD arms.
Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed his gratitude for the new initiative, stating that it will significantly boost Ukraine’s ability to protect lives. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte welcomed Denmark, Norway, and Sweden’s “fast action” in funding the package, which will deliver life-saving equipment and critical supplies to the front lines.
The pledge comes as US President Trump has been putting pressure on European nations to increase their security efforts and is frustrated with Russian President Vladimir Putin over the ongoing war in Ukraine. Analysts suggest that this approach may be effective in securing military aid from European nations, especially those with a history of concern about Russia’s aggression.
