A dangerous bug, known as norovirus, is spreading rapidly throughout the region. Doctors warn that cases of this highly contagious illness are on the rise and may reach historic levels in a decade.
Symptoms can be severe and debilitating, causing extreme nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, muscle cramps, and fatigue. The risk of dehydration is significant, especially among vulnerable populations such as children, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems.
Infectious disease specialist Dr. Jeffrey A. Jahre warns that norovirus can strike suddenly and violently, leaving individuals feeling unwell for hours or even days after the initial onset. He advises washing hands thoroughly with soap and water for at least 15 seconds to prevent transmission, as traditional hand sanitizers are ineffective against this virus.
To mitigate the spread of norovirus, experts recommend using bleach solutions on contaminated surfaces, and using a nail brush to clean under fingernails after using the bathroom. Unfortunately, individuals who contract norovirus may be more likely to experience recurring outbreaks in the future.
While a vaccine is currently in development, efforts to combat this highly contagious illness are ongoing.
