Norovirus is currently circulating in the US, causing widespread illness. In Oregon, outbreaks are reported but individual cases aren’t tracked. As of December 2023, there were 29 norovirus outbreaks across the state.
The virus is highly contagious but not spread through respiratory droplets like a cold or flu. It survives on surfaces and in vomit and feces. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports it’s the leading cause of foodborne illness in the US, particularly among young children and older adults.
This season is seeing a slow return to pre-pandemic levels of norovirus cases, similar to other communicable diseases.
Meanwhile, Oregon residents seeking health insurance coverage can explore options through the Oregon Health Plan. The state’s Human Services department has locations where individuals can apply in person or by phone. Those who qualify for Medicaid will receive benefits immediately, with coverage lasting up to two years under a new continuous eligibility policy.
