North America’s Grid Faces Increased Blackout Risk by 2033

A recent study by a grid reliability regulator warns that most of North America will face increased risk of blackouts over the next decade due to rising electricity demand and the closure of fossil-fuel power plants. The report, released by the North American Electric Reliability Corporation, notes that solar and battery projects are not connecting to the grid quickly enough to replace retiring coal and natural gas generators. These new sources are also more variable and weather-dependent than their predecessors, exacerbating the blackout risk.
