A measles outbreak is spreading rapidly across North Dakota, with 28 confirmed cases reported as of Thursday. Burke County has become the fourth county in the state to report a case, with the latest patient traveling frequently between Williams County and Burke. The virus poses a significant risk, particularly for unvaccinated individuals, who are advised to quarantine for up to 21 days.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warn that measles is highly contagious, spreading through the air and lingering in rooms for hours. Vaccination rates remain high at almost 90% across North Dakota, but health officials emphasize the importance of taking precautions to prevent transmission.
Residents born before 1957 are considered immune, while those who have contracted the virus should monitor symptoms. Unvaccinated individuals exposed to measles are advised to quarantine for up to 21 days.
The outbreak has raised concerns about exposure risks in areas such as Crosby, where possible exposure points have been identified.
