North Korea Fires New Air Defence Missiles Ahead of US-South Korea Summit

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has overseen the test-firing of two new air defence missiles, state media reported on Sunday. The tests, which took place on Saturday, showed that the missiles demonstrated a “fast response” to aerial targets such as attack drones and cruise missiles.

The report did not provide details on the new missiles’ operation and reaction mode, citing only that it is based on “unique and special technology”. The test location was also not specified.

The launches come as tensions are high between North Korea and its South Korean and US allies. A joint military drill by South Korea and the US continues, while a group of North Korean soldiers briefly crossed the heavily militarized border into South Korea on Tuesday. The UN Command reported 30 North Korean troops had made this crossing.

North Korean state media quoted an army officer as describing the incident as a “premeditated and deliberate provocation”. Meanwhile, earlier this month, Kim condemned US-South Korea joint military drills, calling them “most hostile and confrontational” to his country.
