North Korea Fires New Missiles in Test Overseen by Kim Jong Un

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un oversaw a test of two new air defense missiles, state media reported. The KCNA news agency said the missiles had “superior combat capability” and used a “unique technology”, without providing further details.

The launches were carried out on Saturday and aimed to destroy various aerial targets, including drones and cruise missiles. This comes hours after South Korea confirmed it fired warning shots at North Korean soldiers who briefly crossed the Demilitarised Zone (DMZ) separating the countries.

The incident is part of a tense standoff between the two nations, which have been technically still at war since the Korean War ended in 1953. The US and South Korea are currently conducting large-scale joint military exercises in the region, prompting North Korea’s leader to vow to speed up his aim to increase the country’s nuclear arsenal.

The latest missiles fired by North Korea may involve Russian technology, although this has not been confirmed. Senior South Korean officials have raised concerns about possible missile exchanges between Pyongyang and Moscow in exchange for troops supporting Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.
