North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has reaffirmed his country’s support for Russia’s war in Ukraine, stating that it will continue to “unconditionally support and encourage” Russia’s actions. The pledge came after a meeting between Kim and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Saturday.
According to North Korean state media, the two leaders discussed “all the measures” taken by Russia to address the Ukrainian crisis. The report also stated that Russia and North Korea have signed an exchange plan for 2026-2027, although details of the agreement were not released.
The meeting took place in Wonsan, a coastal city in North Korea where the country recently opened a new beach resort. The bilateral talks were described as “strategic dialogue,” during which Choe Son Hui and Lavrov signed the exchange plan.
This comes after Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov met with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Malaysia, where he expressed disappointment and frustration with Russia’s counterparts. However, North Korea has maintained its support for Russia’s actions in Ukraine, despite previous criticism from the US.
It is worth noting that North Korea and Russia have a mutual-defense pact, which was signed last year. The country sent at least 10,000 troops to Russia to aid in the fight against Ukraine, according to estimates from the Pentagon.
